Critical Pitting Corrosion & Crevice Corrosion of Duplex Stainless Steel

3/25/2019

Shell and tube heat exchangers are common in the chemical and energy industry due to the design’s applicability to several uses. In the design, a bundle of tubes is fit inside a shell and a fluid in the tubes is cooled using another fluid that flows over the tubes. U-bends are used in the design of current heat exchangers to maximize the volume with which to exchange heat and to address differential thermal expansion. However, the more U-bends are bent due to strain caused by cold working, the more they are susceptible to corrosion. The tightest bend used in industry is a bend of 1.5 x the outer diameter of the tube, or 1.5D. Less corrosion resistant alloys are required to be stress relief annealed before installation to reduce the corrosion susceptibility from cold working.
This project assesses the effect of heat treatment on the pitting and crevice corrosion resistance of three grades of duplex stainless steel bent into 1.5D radius U-bends to be used in heat exchangers.

Biofuels may trigger stress corrosion cracking of steel. This project measures corrosivity of organic biofuels on 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, and plain carbon steel.

Pitting Corrosion Resistance of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel U-Bends

3/27/2017

The focus of this project is to investigate the corrosion and environmental cracking resistance of ‘as-bent’ 2205 duplex stainless steel U-bends versus U-bends with subsequent annealing. Comparison will be made between the API 660 minimum bend radius of 1.5D and the currently employed 3.3D bend radius.
